Are You Organized Enough?

Updated: May 9, 2019

When you read articles or watch television shows about organizing do they get you thinking about your own organizing efforts, make you wonder if you are doing enough? Do you look on with envy at how your co-workers, friends or family seem to be so organized? Or are you proud of how tidy you are able to keep your belongings because of the organization systems you have in place? Since being organized means being able to find what you want when you need it, you are really the best judge of whether you’re organized enough.

Being organized isn't always about things looking pretty, orderly or calm. Let's dispel the myth that organization means everything has to have color coordinated labels or be stored in matching baskets. Maybe you and many others will be able to sigh a sigh of relief when you look at your surroundings through the lens of function and productivity. Assess your own organization by how productive you are at work or home and how well you manage your time: Is departing your home stressful because of the "daily hunt" for things you need to take with you? Do family members constantly ask you where things are around the house? How often are you pulled off task at the office or with projects at home because you can't find something you need? Do you tend to replace items because it's faster then hunting down the original one you purchased? Do you store things that you anticipate needing someday but still haven't put to use, many years later? If you answered "no" to many of these questions then you are on the right track with organization. Keep it up! You are probably quite productive with your days and able to find time for things you enjoy. On the other hand, if these experiences ring true for you, then you should consider carving out time to address your organization challenges. There are many rather simple organization systems you can implement into your daily routine that will allow you to increase your productivity. Skeptics might say, "but life is messy". Of course life is messy and seeking perfection isn't recommended. But there is a comfortable middle ground between "life is messy, embrace it" and "life is messy, clean it up". Don't let the trap of perfection hold you back from getting more organized. Remember, it's function and productivity that are going to improve your quality of life.
